When Evan started at GTBC in fall 2020, his mother was seeking a smaller ratio from his previous school. Evan displayed a common challenge we see at GTBC: inability to express frustration, cope appropriately, and therefore leading to anger and resulting in harmful tantrum behavior. Evan had some words when he came to GTBC, but it was apparent to the BCBA team that he needed further communication training. While Evan wanted to interact with peers, the need for communication skills training and the potential for harmful behavior effected his ability to build positive relationships with peers. Through reinforcement and functional consequences, Evan learned coping skills and has not exhibited harmful tantrum behavior since summer 2021! He has made many friends within GTBC; he even attempts to use sign language with our Deaf students. He leads many imaginary play scenarios on the playground with kids from different classrooms and looks forward to talking about his weekend on Monday mornings with his friends. Evan now participates in fun peer activities outside of GTBC like hang outs at a local sensory gym and he hopes to join a baseball league soon!

When Sarah started at GTBC, she required assistance with every task, and was what many would consider medically complex. Within the first few months of being at GTBC, Sarah learned how to feed herself with a spoon. Because of the teaching of her amazing RBTs, Sarah has learned socially appropriate ways to get her needs met, such as using her pointer finger to tap on their hand or arm. But most importantly, Sarah was given a voice by using pictures and learned to communicate what she wanted. Now, she uses her pictures to tell her RBT team when she wants to listen to One Direction or Frozen songs. She makes selections for her food choices during a meal time for personal autonomy. She makes her needs known up to 200 times a day! Through shaping and tolerance training, Sarah can now have her hair brushed and her diaper changed without engaging in harmful behavior towards adults. Sarah may still be considered medically complex, but her life and that of her family, has completely transformed before our eyes as she's grown with us over the past few years.
It was less than 2 years ago Trey came to Growing Together completely terrified of teachers and classrooms, he couldn't sit at a desk without a meltdown and while we could tell he was smart, he was too terrified of classrooms and teachers to do any school work. Our BCBAs strategized individualized ways to help Trey regain trust in adults
It was less than 2 years ago Trey came to Growing Together completely terrified of teachers and classrooms, he couldn't sit at a desk without a meltdown and while we could tell he was smart, he was too terrified of classrooms and teachers to do any school work. Our BCBAs strategized individualized ways to help Trey regain trust in adults and learn how to integrate back into a classroom. They started slow with re-learning expectations, and Trey worked one on one with a therapist every day. Today, Trey is in our highest level academic classroom and thriving! With the support of an amazing teacher, he's learning academics such as math, reading & computer skills! He now loves playing board games with his peers and teacher too! Way to go Trey!!!!
